Wheeeeeeee! Stoke-o-meter at breaking point!! ALO at Bobolink festival in the Sierras!!!
Truly a treat.....if you havent been to Bobo yet, you are in for an amazing experience.
My fave festys are Bobo, HSMF, and Tortugas if that says anything.

Each fest has its highlights. Let me speak of Bobolinks:
~The best nature I have yet to experience at a festival. far surpasses Hornings in some ways: Lush green shade everywhere, perfect May temperatures (except for last years freak rainstorms) the Feather River right next to your tent, a train rolling by right up on the ridge, snowpeak mountains in the windy view, if you have driven to High Sierra on 70 Oroville > Quincy you have passed the town of Belden. Its so beautiful there!! EVergreen Lodge is too, but Belden has a little more interests at your feet right at the fest like more water and more quirky wierd historic vibes.

~all night music til the crows call, High Sierra old time style.....Fests dont go this late anymore, but Bobo does!!

~Electronic music....I personally love the blend of bands and DJs. I love that High Sierra is NOT like that, but I love how Bobolink is. :)

~this cool tavern w/a deck that overlooks the river

MAGIC!!! Im so freakin stoked that ALO will bee there with us this year!! Hopefully the wood beez will bee buzzing in the sun and you will all feel the wrath as to why we use those creatures as our Bobolink mascot!!

Come join the Bobolink tribe, or come join us on facebook to watch some videos and see pics

OK ~ so by some heavy manifestation, I was able to get an airline ticket to fly down to So Cal for part of the ALO tour. My plan is, fly into SNA on Tuesday night, get up Wednesday and drive up to Santa Barbara for the show @ SOhO. Hopefully find a place to crash. Get up Thursday and boogie back down to So Cal and get lunch with my Dad, then scurry down to Solana Beach. Friday hit up the show @ W. Hollywood. I fly back to PDX on Sunday night, but don't think I'll be able to get to MOE's... :( We'll see.

I hope to see some of yall there and re-connect, and make new connections too. :)

Anxiously awaiting,

Dave Brogan Summer tour

Myspace link:
www.myspace.com/davebrogan

Press Release:
ALO drummer and songwriter, David Brogan, will be hitting the West Coast this August starting at the Summer Meltdown at the Whitehorse Mountain Amphitheater in Darrington, Wa.

You may know David Brogan as composing well crafted songs behind a wall of drums, holding down the rhythm section of ALO. Fronting his own band on guitar is a "total adrenaline rush" says Brogan. Especially with the musical dream team he has recruited including Paul Hoaglin of The Mother Hips on bass, Tim Young of Zony Mash and Jesse Baylin on guitar, Tony Sevener of Honeycut on drums and Colin Hoops of Big Light and Kanvus on keys.

Brogan will be touring in support of his new album to be released in September produced by Tim Bluhm of The Mother Hips and features performances by Bluhm, Jackie Greene, Dan Lebowitz, Tim Young and Paul Hoaglin. Brogan hopes that leading the band from the front of the stage will put more emphasis on his songwriting and create a closer connection to his fans.

The Dave Brogan tour dates:

August 9th – Summer Meltdown – Darington, Wa. (with Steve Adams (ALO) on bass)
August 10th – Summer Meltdown – Darrington, Wa. (with the Everyone Orchestra)
August 13th – Moe's Alley – Santa Cruz. Ca.
August 14th – Cafe Du Nord – San Francisco, Ca. (with Kanvus)
August 16th – Soho– Santa Barbara, Ca
More summer dates to come!

Free Music Downloads at GabyVmusic.com

Hey Friends,

I just created a site called GabyVmusic.com. This was an idea a friend of mine had to help give me a little spark with the music creating process. The idea is to have one new song posted on my site each week. The spark has really worked and I am already on week number 4, which means I have already uploaded 4 new songs.
Each song posted is totally original and unique to the going's on in my life for that week. I have vowed to follow through with the weekly creation for one full year, so that means at the end of the year I will have a total of 52 new, original songs. Anyone can go on the site (GabyVmusic.com) to listen to and download songs.
People who subscribe to the blog (that's you!! :>) and/or email list can get the song emailed to them immediately when the new song is posted each week.
I am really trying to run with this thing. I am asking for feedback from anyone and everyone on the GabyVMusic.com site. Subscribers can give their own recommendation on themes for upcoming week's songs and also post responses and critiques to songs already posted.
So, if you get a minute, check out GabyVmusic.com and listen to the Songs of the Week!
Much love to you all.

this might be a really silly question, but between 3 modest fans of the band, we couldnt figure out this one line to Walls...

"five white horses on an ocean of sound"

and

"man on the magic tricycle would like to take you for a ride"

Obvious or not, I think the song is about High Sierra, ALO's first time there and the SB PHreaks and what not, but whats the deal with the horses...a hullucination?

any input is appreciated.

It is with great excitement that I am announcing MayflowersIII set to take place at the Cafe Du Nord on Saturday May 31st!!!

This years show promises to be an intimate setting for these three acts to showcase their goods with all the typical high energy Mayflowers has brought in the past. Please join us as we once again lay to rest our hardships and focus on new beginnings and rejoice the warmth that is good music and friendship. The evening will feature several VERY specioal guests and Steve Adams will be performing with all three acts! The Cafe Du Nord only fits 250 people and tickets are moving, so don't delay! This is a night of music not to be missed! I also want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for supporting me over the last three years and allowing me to do this. I feel very blessed to be a part of this community. I hope to see you all at the show!

hALO ALOvers,
Tyler Blue worked his recording magic once again and captured ALO's Tour d'Amour II kick-off party vibe perfectly with his audience mics perched in the rafters high above the blissful revelers below. You can really feel the energy of the crowd as they sing and clap along with the band to co-create the songs as they happen. This is a pure audience tape since the soundboard was unavailable due to the tour being 16-track recorded by the band for future live album release. Their sound engineer David Simon-Baker, along with SOhO house soundman Alan Brown and Gary Atkins, meticulously mic'd each instrument, including SOhO's grand piano so as to catch every sound vibration and thus be able to paint a vibrant soundscape. I can't wait to hear how the multi-track recordings sound, because ALO was pumping out some tasty tunes on Tuesday night. Right from the opening SHINE, you could tell that they were dialed in and ready to groove. As the night progressed, Zach alluded to an underlying theme of the "evolution of a relationship". Once the band and fans became acquainted and opened up to the feeling of mutual admiration, things began to get a bit more intense, and we dove right in head first. An extended COUNTRY CAMPER and funky POSSIBLY DROWN lit the fuse and then they launched into the appropriate VALENTINE"S DAY that had everyone movin' & groovin'. Paul and Brian were ecstatic when the opening notes to GIRL, I WANNA LAY YOU DOWN came through the speakers, listen for their screams of joy ;^) Everyone settled into a smooth WASTING TIME with some nice lap steel licks from Dan, and Smootie tooting on the dueling fluties. Then it was on to the next stage of the relationship where you need to TRY a little harder to build a solid foundation, and with that comes even more beauty and rewards. The LADY LOOP with NA Na Na Nah sing along topped off a spectacularly sizzling hot first set. Set break glow hooping by Jamie, Nicole, Kabir and others provided visual entertainment to compliment the silky sensuous vibe of the night. The second set started off with a WALLS OF JERICHO that was delivered with a slightly different cadence and vocal pattern than normal, almost as if to say just when you thought you knew your partner's every nuance, they show you a different side. Do you really know who this person is? All of a sudden you feel like you are ALL ALONE. But no, really you're not ALOne anymore. Now it's time to say to yourself I BELIEVE (WHEN I FALL IN LOVE IT WILL BE FOREVER). You gotta be THE GARDENER, cultivating your relationship and being true to what grows on... through every part of the SPECTRUM, from adoration to fear, till you reach the comfort of the PLASTIC BUBBLE, and it feels good like an old school (LAYLA) groove. A long and winding BBQ burst into a fiery flaming hot CHILLY CHILE that was so scorching that I thought Dan was going to melt the strings right off his guitar. The aural feast that is MARIA had us overflowing with love, drinking our wine, teasing us with a NORWEGIAN WOOD lick, and took us to the gates of Valhalla to close out an intoxicating second set. For the finale, ALO brought us back down and mellowed us out with that childhood memory invoking summertime feel good tune I CAN"T GO FOR THAT (NO CAN DO), then proceeded to bend and mold the crowd with a 15 minute SHAPESHIFTER that included an audience call and response vocal jam accented by an effects-laden kazoo jam by Lebo, who played it through his guitar pick-ups while he worked his pedals. So Supple!! Happy Valentine's Day everyone!!!

ALOha ALOvers,
Well, the Tour d'Amour II launches tonight at SOhO here in Santa Barbara, and the band said on KJEE this morning that they have some creative twists and tricks worked out that will surely spice up the evening. Gotta love it when they get their creative juices flowing. SOhO always goes off and melts into puddles of love when ALO is in town. Tonight will be no exception. Here is a new upload of nice soundboard from the last time they played the Belly Up Tavern at the end of last summer to get you in the mood.

It was an incredible journey that took everyone through the past, present and into the future. Their 12.31.07 soundcheck was captured by Jarid Johnson of SF Visuals and is exclusively on imeem right now. Go behind the scenes and experience ALO raw as the prepped for an amazing New Year’s show. 4 songs, Sangre, All Alone, Stereo Crickets and Sledgehammer can be seen at
This is a straight soundboard, not a matrix. High energy show w/ Matt Costa, Brett Dennen, Jessie Baylin, and CCDC horns at times sitting in. Good indicator of how upcoming Tour d'Amore will sound.
Big thanks to TaperBruce for recording this show and sending it to me.
Not quite the energy of the latenight from earlier in the festival, but a quality sounding aud. Nice Roses & Clover -> The Gardener with Zach segueing via a "Steve's in the garden don't you know" and an excellent Into the Mystic to end the evening.

Jack Johnson 27Jan08 Interview

Jack is back in Oz
Article from: The Sunday Telegraph
By Nui Te Koha
January 27, 2008 12:00am
http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,23107736-5009160,00.html

JACK Johnson travels with two sets of tour demands. The first is an eco-friendly
backstage rider comprising fresh organic fruits and vegetable platters.

Time to hit the road Jack, but don't forget the familyJack Johnson is an
eco-friendly family man who refuses to travel solo for more than a week.

Johnson's other requests are for his family - wife, Kim, and their two young sons.

"Family is first and foremost,'' Johnson, 32, says. "I build my career around them.

"When I tour, I design it in such a way that, in any given place, we have time to
see parks and zoos and museums.

"It's a family road trip,'' Johnson says. "And at night, I disappear to go and play
shows.''

Johnson's new album, Sleep Through the Static, was partly recorded in the garage at
his family home in Oahu, Hawaii.

"I had to de-clutter, first,'' he says. "In between records, my studio had somehow
become the boys' playroom.''

When Johnson needed to finish the new album in Los Angeles, his wife and kids went
with him.

"I can handle a few days away from home, solo,'' he says. "Anything more than a
week,'' he says, "then the Jack Johnson family road trip takes over.''

Family, love, death and circle of life themes play heavily in Johnson's new songs.

Recently, Johnson has helped raise his two sons, but he has also watched close
friends end their marriage and cancer claim the life of a 19-year-old friend.

"Life deals us whatever it deals us,'' Johnson says.

"I had to say goodbye to a close friend. It was a reality that everyone who knew
and loved him were dealing with.

"I spent a lot of time thinking about him, spending time with him and, in the end,
writing songs that weren't necessarily about that situation.

"But it was on my mind. I'd talk to my own kids and, seeing them grow up, it was
always in the back of my mind. All things must pass. It made me reflect and it made
me appreciate every day I've got.''

Johnson's conversations with his sons about life and loss inspired several new
songs, including Monsoon.

"It is about the inter-connectedness of all things,'' Johnson says. "I was trying
to explain to my son how souls function, and all the examples out there in
nature.''

Johnson's oldest son, Moe, 3, helped write key lines in a song about a relationship
breakdown.
It is titled If I Had Eyes.

"He was drinking a lot of soya milk at the time,'' Johnson says.

"I told him if he kept drinking too much, he would grow a tail with an eyeball at
the end. He looked at me trying to make sure I was kidding.

"When he figured that out, he attached his elbow to his butt and pointing his
finger around the room.

"He had made this tail with an eyeball. He pointed at me and said, `Dad, you look
good'.

"I thought that was a sweet thing to say.

Johnson went immediately into songwriting mode.

"I made a song that said, 'If I had an eyeball on the end of my tail, I'd tell you
that you look good as I walked away.'

"I meant it literally, but once I thought about metaphors (Johnson's friends were
divorcing), it was a beautiful way to put it.

"I switched it around, made it less silly, but kept my son's ideas. I need to give
him a songwriting credit.''

Early reports about Sleep Through The Static said Johnson had left his sea-swept,
soft-rock sound for something electric.

That is partly true.

Sleeping Through The Static starts with the melodic, folk traditions of Johnson's
hit albums, In Between Dreams, On And On and Brushfire Fairytales.

Further into the record, Johnson stretches out with different instrumentation and
freer song structures.

It was his producer and regular collaborator, J.PPlunier, who inspired the change.

"It's been four to six feet and glassy long enough,'' Plunier told Johnson.

Explains Johnson: "It's a term to describe the perfect day of surf. But it was
Plunier's way of saying something to me without being offensive.

"It was time to bring in a few new moods and feelings - make things more dynamic.''

Initially, Johnson meant the album title, Sleep Through the Static, to be cynical.

"We are at war, but it's a war that television viewers can turn on and off whenever
they feel like it,'' he says.

"It doesn't really affect us or our day to day lives.

"We can ignore it. We can sleep through the static.''

Lately, he prefers a more positive take. He cites lyrics from a song titled Home,
which, oddly, is not on the new album.

"We have birds that live in the attic,'' he says. "They whistle and make static.''

Johnson's home studio is solar powered. He built a similar facility, called the
Solar Powered Plastic Plant, in Los Angeles.

It has skylights, the walls are insulated with recycled jeans and panelling made of
recycled timber.

"It's real beautiful, aesthetically pretty,'' he says.

Johnson's green lean is not new. He is following eco-friendly examples set by Neil
Young, Willie Nelson, Jackson Browne and Pearl Jam.

"Willie had a biodiesel bus, so we got one, too,'' he says. "I'm jumping on these
traditions to become part of a group trying to make a change.''

Johnson has a greater affinity with those classic rockers than the pop charts he
dominates. He has sold 15 million albums worldwide.

"There is a whole music industry that feels foreign to me,'' he says.

"Big record companies pumping out formulaic bands. I've never been a part of that
and never known what that would be like.''

But Johnson, whose independent record company, Brushfire, is overseen by a major
label, is prepared for another album-tour cycle. His world tour begins in Australia
in March.

"I need to clarify something,'' he laughs. "I do not own a house in Australia.''

But Johnson is a regular visitor Down Under. In a former life, he made surfing
documentaries and has countless friends across the Pacific.

"I felt at home in New Zealand and Australia right off the bat,'' he says.

"In most other places, people saw me and my music as escapism. Here's a guy in
flip-flops singing about sunnier days. I was the summer vacation guy.''

Sleep Through The Static is released on Saturday.

Jack Johnson plays Centennial Park on Saturday March 15. Ticketmaster 136100 or

ALOha!
Here is a nice audience recording from TaperBruce (you rock!).
http://www.archive.org/details/alo2007-12-31.rodent4.morris.flac16
A bit chatty, but that can be expected for a NYE gig. Zach even says that they left more space between songs than usual to accommodate the social nature of a New Year's Eve party. MC Wavy Gravy adds some authentic San Francisco flavor to the proceedings--compounded by a surprise sit-in by Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann on They Love Each Other > Use Me > They Love Each Other. A cover of Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" busts open the new year in a big way, a rare Celery Stalker adds some crunchy grooves, and the 3-day long BBQ sandwich closer seals the deal to top off another epic NYE run. What a fantastic year it's been for ALO, with the resounding success of Roses & Clover, tons of XM-radio airplay, gigs all over the world, and a burgeoning legion of fans--the future looks bright for the Animal Liberation Orchestra!
LIBERATE IN 2008!!

ALOha,
Second night of the three day NYE run at The Independent is ready on the LMA.

As usual, Ian Stone, with his Schoeps rig, captured an excellent sounding recording full of Smootie's smooth bass, Lebo's rich guitar tone, Brogan's pounding drums, Zach's multi-textured vocal stylings, and the ever-present enthusiastic vibe of a packed house full of ALOvers. The Help on the Way > Slipnot! > Franklin's Tower with double drummers is absolutely ripping!!
Extended Mudbone's Abduction, jamming version of Fly, sax-laden Professa' and the rousing Rock 'n' Roll Baptism (The Womb and Hot Tub) encore solidify this prelude to New Year's Eve.

Happy New Year ALOvers!

First off - THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the drive - it was an amazing success!!

I heard back from the Food Bank today and they notified me that we collected over 300 pounds of food! They told me that this is enough food to provide 234 meals to those in need. What a great vibe to start the New Year on :)

Again, thank you all so much for taking the time to participate in the Food Drive during the NYE Run. It was great seeing so many of you and here's to more good times in 2008

Special thanks to the band, Jenna and the people at the Indy - they all went out of their way to enable the drive to happen, and we wouldn't have been able to pull it off without any of them.

Mike

ps: I heard from Ted and Mia today, they're aboard jam cruise and already giving Fishman a hard time ;)

Hope your holidays have been lovely. And also hope this isn't repeating an earlier thread. But I'm curious if any of y'all could recommend a good link for a Live Music Archived show or two for me to lay on some new friends who are curious to join in the fun this wknd.

For some reason I'm particularly into the "best" version of "Barbeque" out there. I liked what I saw on my 006 birhday at NYC's Mercury Lounge, but never got the tape from Curtis. And the lyrics are just so... appropriate at the moment. Now Playing: SoHo 8-19-07. Thanks for sharing! xorachel

**NYE Food Drive Reminder***

Hi Everybody!

Hope you've all had a great season so far filled with good times and good peeps. One more big one the horizon before we shove off for next year :)

This is a quick reminder of the Food Drive on the *first two nights* of the Indy run. We'll have ample barrels with (unfortunately) ample need, so please try to remember to bring a little something for those among us who aren't as fortunate. In all likelihood your donation will make the difference between a child in The City eating for a day or not - as unbelievable as it may sound, nearly 25% of all children in San Francisco are in danger of going hungry every day (http://www.sffoodbank.org/About-Hunger/Local-Hunger-Study/about-hunger/hunger_study.html).

Items the Food Bank really needs include:

canned vegetables
canned fruit
tuna
soups, stews and chili
peanut butter
cereal

They also remind us that the CANNOT take glass items.

Thank you all in advance for your participation and see you on the dance floor!

haven't seen this posted here yet...

The good people at ALO HQ have thought up some different color themes to help
represent our weekend in "The Garden of Time".
The 29th, the oranges and reds of a warm sunrise.
The 30th, the blues and greens of a perfect California day.
And the 31st, the black and white of an enchanted NYE night.
Dressing up as your Past, Present or Future persona is also an encouraged theme.

ALO could cover "GREASE"

Just realized how well ALO could cover this tune by Frakie Valli....the lyrics are great, too!!
Zach could pull one hell of a Frankie. There could be a movie theme at a show and they could also cover 'Born To Hand Jive Baby"

GREASE
=========
I solve my problems and I see the light
We gotta plug and think, we gotta feed it right
There ain't no danger we can go to far
We start believing now that we can be who we are

Grease is the word
They think our love is just a growing pain
Why don't they understand, It's just a crying shame
Their lips are lying only real is real
We start to find right now we got to be what we feel

Grease is the word
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got groove it's got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling

We take the pressure and we throw away
Conventionality belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believing now that we can be wo we are

Grease is the word
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got groove it's got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling
This is the life of illusion
Wrapped up in trouble laced with confusion
What we doing here?

We take the pressure and we throw away
Conventionality belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believing now that we can be who we are

Grease is the word
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got groove it's got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling

New Years Run Food Drive

Hi Everyone!

I hope this holiday season has a been a fun one for you all so far!

I think it goes unsaid that we're all pretty much some of the most
fortunate folks on the planet. Not only do we get to enjoy the freaky
lifestyles that we do, but on a more basic level we all have
everything we need to live. Most importantly we all have access to
food and nourishment on a daily basis. Yet there are many - too many
- people among us for whom daily food is not a given, but is a bonus.

In SF alone nearly 20% of the population is in danger of going hungry
everyday. For children in the city this number is even higher: 25%

During the **first two nights** of NYE Run there will be barrels to
collect food for the SF Food Bank inside The Independent. We'll be
collecting non-perishable items that will eventually make their way to
the more than 17,000 families in San Francisco who would otherwise not
have enough food. The food collected by the Food Bank during their
Holiday Drives makes up more than 60% of the food they need to help
those in need all year
round.

As we celebrate our way through the holiday season, please take a
small bit of time to participate in the drive and help out those less
fortunate than ourselves by donating some of the following:

canned vegetables
canned fruit
tuna
canned meats
soups, stews and chili
peanut butter
cereal
no glass containers, please

Take it easy everyone, and see you all in a few short weeks!

Mike

THE REFUGEES
Refugees Logo
Hey-lo and Happy Holls!

If you are receiving this newsletter it's because you are being invited to the long-awaited performance of THE REFUGEES, Hazel Aliaga and Samantha Stollenwerck's side project of stripped down, acoustic arrangements of rad cover songs!

In honor of Tom Petty, master and commander of all things big and small, we (Hazel and Samantha), longtime BFFs, partners in debauchery, fellow singer-songwriters and, more specifically, Petty lovers, decided one day over a pint of Guinness to put together a side-project of stripped down, original versions of our fav tunes...other people's tunes, that is.

The project features unique arrangements of songs from bands like Massive Attack, Wilco, Dylan, David Gray, Radiohead, Ben Harper, The Killers and, of course, The Heartbreakers. We'll keep adding on because there's nothing more satisfying than doing a killer, stripped down, harmony-laden version of a great song.

Most of you know us as having graced (if you will) stages for years, from Pappy's Pub and the colorful, microbrew stained carpet of the Bison Brewery in Berkeley to loftier venues such as The Fillmore, The Independent and Viper Room. Hazel currently plays in L.A.-based Latin rock band SONSOLES while SAMANTHA continues to knock out stellar jams with her brand of Cali-Soul.

It was thus decided, on a lazy evening perched over the cherrywood sculpted bar of Tom Bergin's and nearly a decade worth of living room jams later, that we shared a "special something" together and that it would be in our best interest to join musical forces. And that, my sweet and salty friends, is how THE REFUGEES came to be.

We thought it would be cool to take a break from our own projects and put together a special Holiday show for our friends and family. And that's the haps...

Mark your calendars!...

THE REFUGEES
Friday, December 14th
The Derby (V.I.P Acoustic Lounge)
4500 Los Feliz Blvd./ Silverlake, CA
8:30PM
$10 with FLYER/ $15 at DOOR

*FREE Open Bar from 8-9PM! . . .don't forget to mention this at the door to get your drink ticket!

Hope to see you all there!

xo-Stollenwerck & Shmaze
THE REFUGEES

Refugee: A person who, owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is unwilling to avail themselves of the protection of that country.

"It don't really matter to me, baby. Everybody's had to fight to be free.
You don't have to live like a Refugee..."
